The Hawk and the Hummingbird

A pair of red-shouldered hawks made a really messy nest high in an oak on our school grounds; in the picture below, you can just make out the fuzzy head of one of their offspring.

Maybe ten feet from that tree, a hummingbird sits on her nest. As can be guessed, hummingbird nests are really quite small. This is a tight and tidy little nest, held together with spider web.

If you think about it, being under the protection of the hawk parents is not such a bad idea and the hummingbird would not make for hawks the equivalent of a goldfish cracker for us.
