Tasting Prickly Pears

This is the bloom of our native prickly pear cactus. This one was blooming in the salty sand within sight of the St. Marks Lighthouse. The fertilized flower will produce a fruit--that is the pear part-- that is edible.

I have actually tasted it after our younger son peeled it for me ---that was the tricky part!  It was not too bad.

I am not sure I am brave enough to try one but I heard positive reviews about the taste.
