Bluebirds at Buck Lake

This birdhouse has been hanging at our elementary school for a few years. For the past couple of years, a bluebird couple has raised their broods in it. It amazes me that they are content here when several hundred children pass by, close enough to touch it,  five days a week.

I stand my class of kindergartners far enough away to be able to see the action. The parents perch on the gutter on the roof of the next building, watching until the coast is clear. Then they swoop onto and then into the birdhouse. These pictures were taken before the eggs were laid. Later the same process takes place as the babies are fed and the nest is cleaned of droppings.

This spring, they raised two broods here.
