Marching To Zion

The drive into Zion from the east is fun! It is winding and narrow and you go through two stone tunnels. One is so long, pitch black, and narrow that because of the number of drivers, it was reduced to one lane and cars were escorted through.

This is called the checkerboard rock. I would not have named it that, but it is interesting all the same.

At one spot, we stopped to take pictures of desert bighorn sheep.  We were pretty excited to see them, as it was our first ever. Even though, I would not call these BIG horns, they will grow really big, round horns as they mature. These sheep had disappeared from this region and were reintroduced in the early 1970s into Zion. Today the herd numbers about 500 and, in the spring, consideration was being given to relocating about 100 sheep. I do not know the result of the plan.

In hindsight, these are mostly hind sights!
