Owl-Standing!

B spotted this Great-Horned Owl at some distance when we were driving past an eagle's nest down near the lighthouse. We had seen one here before but the light was very poor and the photos were the same.

This is a large bird, with wingspans of 36-60 inches. The colors and patterns are perfect for this pine.



In this picture, you can see the feathers on the legs and feet: they look quite furry.


And the great horns of Great-Horned Owls are neither horns nor ears, just more feathers.


I read that one ear is typically higher on the skull than the other to be able to pinpoint the source of sounds more accurately than we can with our matched set. Whooooo knew?
