St. Malo Chapel

Along the road to Estes Park, we stopped for a few minutes to admire the chapel at St. Malo that is framed by Mt. Meeker. It was built by the sheer determination of a priest on a chunk of granite that was destined to be dynamited to straighten the highway. It took twenty years but a benefactor was found. The Malo family bought the land and bequeathed a sum to build the chapel and pay for its upkeep for years. The first mass was said in 1936.

This window, showing St. Catherine holding Christ on the cross, was made in Munich, Germany.

In 1993, Pope John Paul II visited and blessed the chapel when he came to Denver.
