On Valentine’s Day, we drove up to Atlanta for the night. We met both sons and the daughter-in-law and the girlfriend and had a wonderful weekend. Cell phones and GPS info are great, but it can still be a little tricky meeting up with each other when you start from different points in Florida. And so it was that B and I found ourselves in south Atlanta a few hours ahead of the “kids.” We went to the outlet shops. We had a leisurely lunch at OB’s Barbecue right off I-75. It was just a good as we remembered. We thought we would go walk through the mall but it did not feel comfortable even driving around the parking lot, so we checked the map for other diversions.
And that is how we came to be at Reynolds Nature Preserve in Morrow, Georgia on Valentine’s afternoon. It had rained much of the drive up and had stopped, so we walked around waiting to hear that the “kids” were close. It is a place worth exploring more than we had time for.
The simplicity of this fountain had great appeal for me. The water came out of the middle of the large stone and then sheeted off the sides and fell into a deep reservoir, creating a nice sound.
We walked around a little pond. I was amused by this sign at the end of the dock. There were also signs to not fish or feed the wildlife but they lacked clever graphics.
There were plantings of daffodils blooming here and there along the trail, but my pictures did not do them justice.
B was examining this small tree, when the call came that it was time for us to get back in the car.
It had small cones…
and large catkins.
B thinks it is something in the birch (Betulaceae) family. It is possibly a hazel or tag alder, Alnus serrulata. It would help it there had been leaves. There are 150 species to choose among!
Reynolds Nature Preserve is worth a second look on another trip.
